YouTube Monetization: How Channels Get Paid

The Partner Program rules, the payout math and how to start a channel.

YouTube monetization means earning money from your channel through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), plus income from sponsors, affiliate links and your own products. YPP has two tiers. Fan funding and Shopping open at 500 subscribers, and ad revenue opens at 1,000 subscribers.

Each tier also needs watch hours or Shorts views inside a rolling window. Ads need 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. Once you are in, long-form creators keep 55% of ad revenue on their videos and Shorts creators get 45% of their allocation from the Shorts creator pool.

The path runs in a fixed order: start a channel, grow to a threshold, set up AdSense and 2-Step Verification, then apply. YouTube says its review typically takes about one month, and after approval you add the income streams that ads do not cover. Each step has its own guide below.

The YouTube Monetization Thresholds at a Glance

YouTube monetization opens in two tiers, and you clear each tier through one of two counters. The table shows both. Every number comes from YouTube’s own help pages.

TierSubscribersWatch-hour pathShorts pathWhat you earn
Expanded YPP500, plus 3 valid public uploads in 90 days3,000 hours in 12 months3 million Shorts views in 90 daysMemberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, Shopping
Ad revenue sharing1,0004,000 public hours in 12 months10 million public Shorts views in 90 days55% of long-form ad revenue, 45% of your Shorts pool allocation, YouTube Premium revenue

Both tiers share the same account rules. You must live in a YPP country or region, follow the channel monetization policies, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on 2-Step Verification and link one active AdSense for YouTube account. The YouTube monetization requirements reference explains each rule and what counts as a qualified hour or view.

Two details catch new creators. Watch hours from the Shorts feed do not count toward the 4,000 hours. And both counters are rolling, so views older than the window fall off your total.

Step 1: Start a Channel Built to Qualify

A channel reaches monetization faster when it is built around one topic and a steady upload pace from day one. Pick a narrow subject, set up the channel, and plan 10 videos before you publish the first. The expanded tier asks for 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days, so a regular schedule matters from the start.

How to start a YouTube channel for beginners covers the account, the channel setup, the first 10 videos and the budget gear worth buying. If you do not want to appear on camera, how to start a faceless YouTube channel covers voiceover and screen-recording formats that can still monetize.

Step 2: Choose Watch Hours or Shorts Views

Choose the counter that matches the videos you make best, because splitting effort between both usually leaves you halfway to each. The arithmetic makes the choice clearer.

Longer average view duration cuts the views you need. A tutorial people watch for 8 minutes needs half the views of one they watch for 4. Shorts can climb faster when a format catches on, but the 90-day window means the total can fall just as fast.

YouTube Shorts monetization explains the Shorts path in full, including how the pool is split and why licensed music lowers what reaches creators.

Step 3: Apply and Pass the Review

You apply from the Earn section of YouTube Studio once a counter is met. Turn on 2-Step Verification and prepare your AdSense details before then, so the application is quick. YouTube says a decision typically comes in about one month.

The review checks your channel against the monetization policies. In July 2025, YouTube renamed its repetitious content policy to inauthentic content. Mass-produced, repetitive, template-made videos cannot monetize. Reused clips and compilations need meaningful added value. YouTube also said that AI use and faceless formats are not banned, as long as the channel adds original commentary or value. YouTube automation covers where automated channels cross that line.

If YouTube rejects the channel, you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days (90 days after a repeat rejection). Use the wait to remove or rework the weakest videos. The full process, from zero subscribers to approval and through a rejection, is in how to get monetized on YouTube.

Updated YPP terms take effect February 1, 2027. Creators must accept them in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to keep fully monetizing. Some blogs claim higher thresholds are coming, but YouTube’s help page does not say so.

Step 4: Add Income Beyond Ads

Ad revenue is one of eight YouTube income streams, and it pays only after a channel clears the thresholds. The others fill gaps that ads leave:

RPM (revenue per mille, or earnings per 1,000 views) varies widely by niche, audience country and format. Long-form finance and tech videos earn far more per view than Shorts. Ignore any single “YouTube pays $X per 1,000 views” figure. How to make money on YouTube compares all eight streams and the order to add them.

Paid deals and affiliate links need disclosure. The FTC Endorsement Guides, revised in 2023, require you to disclose any material connection clearly and conspicuously, in the video and in the description. The brand deals hub covers media kits, rates and contracts.

Step 5: Set Money Aside for Taxes

YouTube income is taxable from the first payment. In the US, it counts as self-employment income, and self-employment tax of 15.3% applies once net self-employment earnings reach $400. Quarterly estimated payments on Form 1040-ES are usually expected once income is steady.

Use your legal name and address on AdSense so tax forms match your records. The Modern Wallet’s guide to YouTube taxes explains how YouTube income is taxed. Earn by Creating does not give personal tax advice, so take your own numbers to a tax professional.

Who Should Not Plan Around YouTube Ads

YouTube ad revenue is a poor plan for anyone who needs income within a few months. Reaching a threshold takes time, and the review adds about a month. If you need money sooner, start with affiliate links, sponsors or paid UGC work for brands, which needs no audience. The UGC creator hub explains that route.

Ads are also closed to channels outside YPP countries and to channels built on reused clips. Fix the format first, or build income from sponsors and products instead.

Our advice to pick one counter and apply at the expanded tier first would change if YouTube moved the thresholds in the 2027 terms. Your next step for YouTube monetization is to open the Earn tab in YouTube Studio and enter your numbers into the YouTube monetization checker.

Frequently asked questions

How does YouTube monetization work?

YouTube pays creators who join the YouTube Partner Program. In the ad tier, you keep 55% of ad revenue on long-form videos and 45% of your Shorts pool allocation. In the expanded tier, viewers pay you through memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and Shopping.

How many views do you need to get monetized on YouTube?

YouTube counts qualified watch hours or qualified Shorts views rather than total views. Ads need 4,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in 90 days, plus 1,000 subscribers. The expanded tier needs 3,000 hours or 3 million Shorts views, plus 500 subscribers and 3 recent uploads.

How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?

There is no single rate. RPM (revenue per mille, or earnings per 1,000 views) varies widely by niche, audience country and format, and long-form finance or tech videos earn far more per view than Shorts. YouTube Analytics shows your own RPM once you are monetized.

How long does YouTube take to approve monetization?

YouTube says a decision typically comes in about one month after you apply. If YouTube rejects the channel, you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days (90 days after a repeat rejection). How to get monetized on YouTube covers what to fix before you reapply.

Are YouTube monetization rules changing in 2027?

Updated YPP terms take effect February 1, 2027, and creators must accept them in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to keep fully monetizing. Some blogs claim higher thresholds are coming. YouTube’s help page does not say so.

Can faceless and AI channels be monetized?

Yes, when they add original value. YouTube said in July 2025 that AI use and faceless formats are not banned. Mass-produced, template-made videos fall under the inauthentic content policy and cannot monetize. The faceless hub covers how these channels stay eligible.
